Historic Floor; the Chapel (Nave)

The historic floor in the Nave of the Chapel was heavily soiled and contained a thick layer of impermeable coating. The impermeable coating was damaged and peeling off in many areas from the floor surface. The conservation treatment involved removal of impermeable coating, surface soiling which included (dirt, old layers of wax and other coating). A variety of conservation cleaning methods were used and undertaken in stages to clean the heavily soiled surface and to remove the coating. Damaged stone sections were stabilised and areas of missing stone substrate were re-filled. Reinstatement of the colour finish of the individual types of stone used on the flooring was undertaken and followed by an application of a protective wax layer.
