Effigy figures - R & M Verney
Alabaster effigy figures of Richard and Margaret Verney; 1530; medieval tomb; the Chapel, Compton Verney
The alabaster effigies were heavily soiled. The soiling was ingrained in the surface and difficult to removed. As the alabaster is such a soft material and soluable in polar solvents, a number of appropriate cleaning techniques had to be used to gradually remove the ingrained dirt. The final result was successful and striking, while keeping the alabaster substrate intact.
