Monument to Greville Verney

Large free standing wall monument to Greville Verney; 1668; black and white marble; Chapel at Compton Verney

The monument required extensive surface conservation treatment in order to reinstate the original colour scheme of this wonderful monument. Surface cleaning was undertaken in stages and different cleaning methods were used for different types of stone. The lettering on the engraved panel was in-painted in white and the dark colour of the black ‘marble’ stone was re-instated. Areas of missing pointing were re-pointed and the foot of one of the cherubs was fully restored. Upon completion, the result of the treatment was striking and allows the monument to be visually appreciated as it was originally intended.
